This project supports the development and delivery of an interdisciplinary astronomy course that integrates traditional cultural knowledge and contemporary space science. The course will be team taught by three faculty members representing Fort Belknap College’s Science, Technology and American Indian Studies Departments. Key features of the course include: extensive hands-on learning and problem-solving exercises, technology-aided instruction, story telling sessions with Gros Ventre (Ah-Ah-Ni-Nin) and Assiniboine (Nakoda) elders, night sky observations, and a field trip to the planetarium at the Museum of the Rockies. As a result of this project, Fort Belknap College will strengthen and expand its existing SMET curriculum and offer students a relevant and engaging learning opportunity that will increase their interest in, and knowledge of, astronomy.
