Alfredo Arevalo

I am a student from Arvin California, and I am currently studying computer engineering at Bakersfield College. I am currently a sophomore and plan to transfer to UC Riverside to earn my bachelor’s degree. I became interested in the solar spectrograph when I heard about it. I thought it was intristing because I like competing against other university’s around the nation. I think by competing in this competition I will learn so much about the sun and the technology they use to study it. My role in the team is to research the color spectrum given off by the sun, collect data and also to build and test the spectrograph.

Joanna Moraza

I live in Bakersfield, California and I am the first generation to continue with my education beyond high school. I attend Bakersfield College where I am part of the Engineering program; I intend to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona where I will pursue my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I became part of the National Solar Student Spectrograph Competition because it seemed like a great opportunity to expand my knowledge about the technological innovations that are being generated and used to study our universe. Not only that, but this research project will enable me to further develop my set of skills that can potentially affect my career in a positive way. My role in the team includes recording data, doing research, implanting new ideas, and communicating with our advisors.

Andres Leyva

I am currently a sophomore at Bakersfield College, and I am originally from Arvin, California. I come from a family of farm workers and I’m the first family member attending college. I maintain myself involved in clubs, like the Hispanic Organization Promoting Engineering and Science Club, where I am the vice president; also I’m a member in Bakersfield college engineering club. My interests include fixing cars, car audio, and computers. During my spare time I also tune or upgrade parts in my 1992 Lincoln Town Car. I have always loved challenges like using analytical skills and solving problems in my engineering and math courses and this competition is a great integration of all these aspects.

Ricardo Lerma

I was born on July 09 1986, in Bakersfield CA and am a student at Bakersfield College. Raise in a family of six, I am the first to graduate high school and go to college. I am currently studying to be a computer engineer. In my spare time off, I work on side jobs and go to church; participating in the worship and helping to keep records of the finances.
